In the heart of Tehran’s historic Sangelaj neighborhood, a remarkable initiative has been breathing new life into the community. The Sangelaj Urban Waste Workshop, held in March 2024, brought together a diverse group of individuals—including architects, artists, environmentalists, municipal staff, and local residents—to address the longstanding issue of shoe production waste in the area.
Over two days, participants engaged in hands-on activities, transforming discarded shoe materials into public art and spatial installations. The first day focused on material exploration and cultural context, while the second was dedicated to fabrication and installation in public spaces. The results were impressive: benches, sculptural lighting, and textile-inspired installations that revitalized neglected alleys and fostered neighborhood pride.
This community-based urban intervention not only tackled environmental concerns but also strengthened social bonds among residents. By involving local shopkeepers, youth, women, and individuals struggling with addiction, the workshop promoted inclusivity and collective action. Such initiatives demonstrate the power of art and collaboration in addressing urban challenges and enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
